Henry Meeuwse serves as the Commissioned Pastor at Bethel Presbyterian Church, PCUSA. Originally from Michigan, Pastor Henry served in lay ministry in South- Eastern Kentucky with the Reformed Church in America. He was called to the James Island Presbyterian Church and Foundation in Charleston. Pastor Henry served for thirty-two years as Executive Director of the James Island Presbyterian Foundation and thirty years as the Associate in Ministry for Mission and Outreach. He has Master’s degrees in Counseling and Personnel Administration and graduated from the South Carolina Presbyterian Lay School of Theology. Married to Dr. Kristi (Woods) Meeuwse originally of Greenville, SC, they are the parents of four children: Chris (Amanda), Michael, Matthew, and Kelsea (Adam). The grandparents of Bronson, Savannah, Noah, and David. And the parents of the four-legged family member, Coco. Pastor Henry’s interests include spending time outdoors, camping, reading, hiking, visiting, and family. He currently serves as chairman of the advisory council for the SC Presbyterian Lay School of Theology, a board member of Charleston Area Senior Citizens/Meals on Wheels, Inc., and a board member of Ansonborough House, Inc., a six-story, affordable housing project with 77 apartments for older adults.
JOE MESHACH is a native of Blairstown, New Jersey. He began his musical career at the age of 10 and was selected for the Who's Who in Music while still a high school student in 1980, the same year that he traveled and performed throughout seven countries in Europe as a member of the All-Student Marching Band. A graduate of Newberry College in 1985, he has served the students of South Carolina as a music educator, clinician, music arranger, and mentor for 35 years. He taught at Barnwell High, Walterboro High, Wade Hampton High, and Fort Dorchester High. Although officially retired, he teaches at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High and is active in the SC Music Educators Association, serving as a past president of the SC Band Directors Association. He continues to serve as a guest conductor, clinician, arranger and adjudicator for marching and concert festivals, clinics, and band competitions.
Joe, an ordained elder, became choir director at Bethel in the fall of 1993 and has served as music director since 1996. He also serves on the Discipleship Committee.
Joe and his wife Cathy, who is also an ordained elder and a music educator, have been married for 35 years. They have one adult daughter Jennifer, a graduate of Newberry College and a member of Bethel.
Carolyn Burns serves as pianist/organist. She hails from Ohio where she earned degrees in music from Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University. She has played the piano since she was a child. Since graduate school, Carolyn has served many denominations as well as several high school, college, and community choirs. Although playing the piano is her favorite thing to do, she also enjoys tennis and gardening. She and her husband have three adult sons.
Sharon was born and raised in Walterboro. She is a graduate of Walterboro High School, the College of Charleston (BA French), and the University of South Carolina (M.Ed.). She taught high school for 28 years before retiring in 2013. For the next seven years, she worked at a local bank. She joined our team at Bethel in September 2020. She and her husband Tracy have four cats. They enjoy hiking and exploring waterfalls.
